Joining the thriving group of artist-run exhibition spaces, Terrain is a new public space in Oak Park, IL started by artist Sabina Ott. Terrain is dedicated to featuring interventions into the conventional landscape of a front yard by emerging as well as established artists who have been invited to create a site - specific work. Artists are chosen for their ability to make artworks that challenge the space between public and private, decoration and function, figure and ground. Terrain differs from many other alternative art platforms in that the artworks are accessible and visible 24 hours a day, year round. Situated in Oak Park, a traditionally liberal multicultural village, Terrain is directly across from Longfellow Elementary School, across from Longfellow Park near Ridgeland and Jackson Avenues. Visitors, neighbors, school children, teachers and their parents will be exposed to challenging contemporary art, offering the experience of discovery and surprise to the community. The interstice between the physical and the virtual has created a new visual language that has infiltrated our daily lives. In Higher Definition, Nelemans features virtual iconography manifested in sculptural form. This intervention, where Google street-view icons will be recreated and affixed to rectilinear shaped Plexiglas that refers to the computer screen, points to how digital information alters our perception of actual spaces and places.<br/><br/>Jeroen Nelemans (1974) received a Full Merit Scholarship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and finished his MFA in 2007. His shows include the Mission Gallery in Chicago, the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, the DelaCruz Collection Contemporary Space in Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. Spanish design elements added character. Today, theses iron fences are not only viewed as a protection device as much as a language that pertains to the island’s visual culture. Graft alludes to the aesthetic, decorative and nostalgic qualities of these iron fences by transplanting a similar fence in front of Terrain’s facade.</p> <p>Edra Soto (b. Puerto Rico 1971) is a Chicago based artist. In 1995 Edra received the Alfonso Arana Fellowship to work in Paris for one year. She attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she obtained her Masters of Fine Arts in 2OOO. Immediately after, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work has been feature in New American Paintings and her show at Ebersmoore was selected one of the Best Solo Exhibitions of 2010 in NewCity Art of Chicago. Soto has lectured at El Museo de Puerto Rico, Harold Washington College and The Art Institute of Chicago among others.</p> <p>Locally, she has exhibited at Roots and Culture, the Chicago Cultural Center, Ebersmoore, New Capital and at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago among others. Recent artist residencies include Ragdale’s newly renovated Meadow, with a grant from the 3Arts Foundation and Beta-Local in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Recent presentations include: Archival Impulse at UIC Gallery 400 and Afterimage satellite exhibitions at the Roger Brown Study Collection and at Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts curated by Dahlia Tulet and Thea Liberty Nichols. She is currently participating in The Center Program at the Hyde Park Art Center, with a grant from The Joyce Foundation.</p> <p>Soto and her husband, Dan Sullivan, design, fabricated and currently run operations of The Franklin, an artist run space located in their home’s backyard in Chicago. And as if that weren’t enough, they point beyond themselves.” <br/>Robert Adams, “Along Some Rivers” <br/><br/>“Forest” is a site-specific installation that brings together donated used Christmas trees from the surrounding Oak Park neighborhood to create a miniature forest grove in the front yard of Terrain. The installation is accompanied by a 100-page artist book of photographs of trees made during Lee’s travels in California, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, O<span class="text_exposed_show">regon, Austria, and Newfoundland.<br/><br/>Jin Lee is a Chicago-based artist whose photographs of the Midwestern landscapes explore particularities of a place. Her works are included in the permanent collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Madison Art Center, and Museum of Contemporary Photography. She has received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and the Illinois Arts Council grant, and is currently a Professor of Art at Illinois State University.
